What is a mixed needs family?

It's a home where some of your kids are neurotypical and some are neurodivergent, and the thing that works beautifully for one child is the exact thing that makes another one fall apart.

There's a name for it now. That name is most of what I wanted to give you.

A mixed needs family is a household raising both neurotypical and neurodivergent children at the same time. It means parenting two or more kids whose brains process the world in fundamentally different ways, under one roof, with one set of parents, usually with one set of expectations that fits nobody perfectly.

The autism resources assume all your kids are autistic. The general parenting books assume none of them are. Almost nothing is written for the house in between.

That house is mine, too.

You know it's a mixed needs house when:

  • The consequence that works on one kid is meaningless to the other, and using it anyway makes everything worse
  • One child needs the schedule announced and the other needs it flexible, and you're the one holding both
  • A sibling is quietly absorbing less attention because a brother or sister needs more, and you can see it happening and can't fix it
  • You've been told you're inconsistent by someone who has never had to parent two operating systems at once
  • Church is complicated, because the children's ministry isn't set up for this and you're tired of explaining
  • You feel like you're failing all of them differently, which is a specific kind of exhaustion

None of that means you're doing it wrong. It means the job is genuinely harder than most people understand.

Terrie's Story

I didn't set out to work in this space. I set out to raise my kids.

What I found was that every resource I picked up was written for a house that wasn't mine. I'd read something excellent about supporting a neurodivergent child and it would say nothing about the sibling watching from the doorway. I'd read something excellent about family discipleship and it would assume every kid in the room could sit still for it.

So I started talking about it. That turned into the Mixed Needs Mama podcast, and then into books, printables, and craft guides built for actual mixed needs homes. Not theory. Things I tried, in my house, on hard days.

You're not inconsistent. You're doing 2 jobs at once.

Some days you'll get it right for one kid and wrong for the other, and both of those things will be true at the same time. That's the actual shape of this. Anyone who tells you otherwise hasn't done it.

You're not alone in it, and you're not failing.
