Embracing Radical Hospitality: A Call to Authentic Connection

September 25, 2024

By Nancy Bouwens

Friends, remember when we were young, and friendships just seemed to happen? As we grow older, life has a way of building walls around our hearts. We find ourselves showing  only the polished, “everything’s fine” versions of ourselves to the world. But deep down, we are weary of the charade and we are lonely.

The Beauty of Imperfection

What if, just for this week, we tried something different? Instead of striving for perfection, let’s dig deep for something more. I believe with all my heart that each connection, each interaction we’re blessed with, is a gift – a chance to create something special.

Radical hospitality isn’t about a spotless house or gourmet meals. It’s more about creating a haven where we can let our guard down and truly be seen. It becomes a place of belonging where we can share the stories that have shaped us – the triumphs and the struggles.

It’s opening our hearts and homes with a message that says, “Come as you are. You’re welcomed here.”

The Magic of Real Connection

When we dare to extend this kind of heartfelt welcome, something magical happens. We uncover connections our souls have been yearning for all along.

We realize we’re not the only ones who are navigating life’s unexpected twists and turns.  Everyone we meet longs for significance whatever age and stage they are in.

When we allow others into our life, we realize in a very real way we are not alone in our struggles. We find we are not alone in our doubts and together we are stronger than we ever imagined!

Simple Steps to Start Today

Let’s make this week different. Here are a few ways to cultivate those precious spaces of radical love!

  • Invite a neighbor over for tea:  No need to fuss – mismatched mugs have more character anyway!
  • Walk and Talk: During your next stroll in the park, truly listen to the friend who walks beside you. Then, bravely share a challenge of your own. Friendship is both give and take. It is much like a gentle toss of the ball, back and forth.
  • Pen a heartfelt note: Send a handwritten message to someone who’s been on your heart. Tell them how special they are to you!

You’ll be amazed at how these small acts of intentional actions can foster solid, strong, and lasting friendships that can grow over time.

A Ripple of Change

I believe, with every ounce of my being, that one small act of love can create ripples that change lives – perhaps even your own. It’s like tossing a pebble into a pond; you simply never know how far those circles will reach.

So, my friend, are you ready to join me? Let’s make a pact to be the ones who create spaces where others (and ourselves) feel truly seen, heard, and treasured. It might feel a little daunting at first, but oh, the joy that awaits on the other side of that fear!

Your Turn to Shine

I’m curious: What one small step will you take this week towards a life of hospitality and invitation?

Share your thoughts and ideas in the comments below. Let’s inspire one another to be brave and step out of comfort zone just a little!

In a world that often feels disconnected, your act of radical hospitality could be the very thing someone is praying for today. You have the power to make a difference, right where you are.

Here’s to rediscovering the art of true connection, one heartfelt gesture at a time.
