December Book Club and Some Christmas Classics You May Have Missed
December 4, 2023
This month, of course we have to read Christmas books. Tis the season! But I hope we’ve found some intriguing books that may become a yearly tradition. Here are some books beyond Clement C. Moore’s classic.
Board Book:
Share the Joy by Valerie Ellis
I’m so excited to share this board book with you! It was just released in October, and it is an adorable lift-the-flap board book. The pictures have so many items for children to point out and talk about. It also shares many concepts we want our children to understand and practice like thankfulness, giving, and sharing.
I’m not listing one for each week this time simply because the Advent Calendar of Books linked below suggests many books to read this month. Check it out below.
Picture Book:
Room for a Little One by Martin Waddell
Chapter Book/Novel:
This book is actually a collection of stories by Max Lucado, but they are appropriate reading for middle schoolers and high schoolers or older. I especially recommend The Christmas Candle, but several stories are in Christmas Stories by Max Lucado. Some have been made into movies as well.
Book for Mom and Dad:
Bethlehem the Year Jesus Was Born: Unwrapping the Theology Behind Christmas by Scott Douglas. I found this book fun to read even though it is dealing with theology, history, and culture. It made me think. It made me focus more on the miracle of Christmas. I hope you love it like I have.

Classic Authors and Some Christmas Stories They Gave Us
Do you love Christmas stories? I’m not talking about the endless love stories on TV that have a Christmas backdrop, but some compelling and unusual Christmas stories from classic writers we all know and mostly love.
Here’s a list of some stories you may not have read before, and a few that hopefully you’ve visited many times through the years:
Alcott, Louisa May: Little Women, A Merry Christmas and Other Stories, A Christmas Dream
Baum, L. Frank: A Kidnapped Santa Claus, Little Bun Rabbit
Capote, Truman: A Christmas Memory
Cather, Willa: The Burglar’s Christmas
Dickens, Charles: A Christmas Carol, The Cricket on the Hearth, A Christmas Tree (and other stories)
Irving, Washington: Christmas
Milne, A. A: A Hint for Next Christmas
Montgomery, Lucy Maud: Christmas at Red Butte, Uncle Richard’s New Year Dinner
O’Henry: Gift of the Magi
Potter, Beatrix: The Tailor of Gloucester
Saki (H. H. Munro): Reginald’s Christmas Revel, Reginald on Christmas Presents, Bertie’s Christmas Eve
Stowe, Harriet Beecher: The First Christmas of New England and Other Christmas Stories
Thomas, Dylan: A Child’s Christmas in Wales
Tolkien, J. R. R: Letters from Father Christmas
Tolstoy, Leo: Where Love Is, There God Is Also (and other stories)
Twain, Mark: A Letter from Santa Claus
van Dyke, Henry: The Other Wise Man
These are just a few. I encourage you to do a web search for Christmas stories your favorite author may have written. Many are short stories, some are quirky and strange, and others are just plain fun.
May your family have a blessed Christmas!
